Study permit

What Is a Study Permit?

A Study Permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that authorizes international students to pursue academic programs at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) across Canada.

A Study Permit is not a visa. Depending on your country of residence, you may also need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada legally.

Why Choose Canada for Higher Education?

Canada offers a dynamic academic experience and promising post-graduation opportunities. Here’s why students around the world choose Canada:

  • World-Renowned Education: Home to leading universities and colleges known for academic excellence and research innovation.
  • Affordable Education: Competitive tuition fees compared to the U.S., U.K., and Australia.
  • Work While You Study: Legally work up to 20 hours per week during academic terms and full-time during scheduled breaks.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): Gain Canadian work experience after your studies and boost your chances of obtaining PR.
  • Pathway to Permanent Residency: Many students transition to PR through Express Entry, PNPs, or the Canadian Experience Class.

Eligibility Requirements for a Study Permit in Canada

To apply for a Student Visa or Study Permit, you must meet these criteria:
  • Letter of Acceptance : You must provide a valid acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Only schools listed on IRCC’s DLI list are eligible.
  • Proof of Financial Support : You must demonstrate that you have adequate funds to cover:
    1. Tuition fees
    2. Living expenses
    3. Return transportation
    4. Acceptable proofs include bank statements, scholarship awards, or Canadian bank accounts in your name.
  • Clean Criminal Record
  • A police clearance certificate may be required to confirm you do not pose a security risk.
  • Medical Examination : Some applicants must undergo a medical exam, especially if they plan to stay for over six months or come from countries with high health risks.
  • Intent to Return : You must show you intend to leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay, even if you’re later eligible to apply for PR.
